Seeking the Sons of Abraham

 

Luke 9:1-10 tells the story of Zaccheus and his desire to see Jesus.  Verses 9 and 10 are Jesus’ response to Zaccheus:
 
9 And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he too, is a son of Abraham.
10 For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”
 
The traditional interpretation of these passages is that Jesus came to save those who are lost, meaning those without salvation and on their way to hell. But there is something deeper here.  Jesus referred to Zaccheus as a “son of Abraham”.  Now, Jesus knew exactly what He was talking about.  According to Romans 4:16 and Galatians 3:7, the true sons of Abraham are the spiritual Zion, God’s sons in the earth.
          
Zaccheus was lost. Not in the traditional sense of being lost, but “lost” in the sense that he had no awareness of his true identity.  Now, here’s the kicker: Even the sons of Abraham get lost occasionally.  They lose their way, wander off, get spiritual amnesia, or whatever.  And then the Lord Jesus comes and finds those who are lost.  Whatever rock they’re under, whatever wilderness they’ve wandered into, the Lord finds them and meets them.  He touches their hearts and reminds them, “You too are a son of Abraham.”  They are restored to their true heritage.
 
The Lord is always faithful to seek out the sons of Abraham, to remind them of their heritage, of who they really are.  And as He “finds” us, we behold Him, perceiving afresh His purposes.
 
This ministry of seeking out the sons of Abraham becomes the ministry of the body of Christ as well. It becomes the emphasis of the Kingdom evangelism. By the Holy Spirit we seek and search out those sons of Abraham who as yet don’t have a revelation of their true heritage.
